Keyboard Tester
Online keyboard tester
Check every key on a laptop or desktop keyboard before you buy. It runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Click the keyboard below, or choose “Start testing”, then press any key.
While testing is active, this page captures your keys, so Tab, Space and the arrow keys won’t scroll or move focus. To leave: hold Esc for one second, choose “Stop testing”, or click outside the keyboard. On narrow screens, swipe sideways to see the whole keyboard.

Which keys can a browser not detect?
- Fn key. On most laptops Fn is handled by the keyboard firmware or the operating system, so a website never receives an event for it. This tester does not claim to test Fn. To check it, press Fn with a key that has a visible effect, like volume or brightness, and see whether the system responds.
- Fn combinations and media keys. Brightness, volume, mute, keyboard backlight, airplane mode, touchpad lock and other manufacturer shortcuts are usually consumed by the system before the browser sees them. Some laptops send F1–F12 only when Fn is held, depending on the “Fn lock” or BIOS setting.
- Reserved shortcuts. Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+Tab, Alt+F4, Win+L, Ctrl+W, Ctrl+T, Ctrl+N and similar combinations are taken by the browser or operating system and cannot be blocked by a web page.
- Windows or Cmd key. Pressing it may open the Start menu or Launchpad. The tester releases the key automatically when the page loses focus, so it will not stay highlighted.
- Print Screen. Windows only reports the key release, so it lights up briefly after you let go.
- Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock. Some browsers on macOS send only one event per press, so these keys flash briefly instead of staying held.
- F11 and F12. Some browsers still switch to full screen or open developer tools. If that happens, the key itself is working.
- Other keyboard layouts. Keys are matched by physical position, so a non-US keyboard still works. Printed symbols may differ, and extra keys such as the ISO key next to Left Shift appear under “Other keys detected”.
- Phones and tablets. On-screen keyboards do not report physical keys. Connect a hardware keyboard to test it.
- Every key on every device. No website can promise that. If a key does not light up, test it again, try another browser, and check that the operating system itself receives the key.
Buying a used laptop? Press every key firmly a few times. Look for keys that never light up, stay lit after release, or register more than once per press.
